Series of 6 documentaries
Rian van den Boom and Marco van Es are independent makers of documentaries for the Dutch television. They have created a series of 6 documentaries of 30 min. focusing on the problems of the integration of the new public entity Statia into the Dutch constellation. It will be no surprise that this results in a “clash of cultures”. History has shown that the big waves will lay down after the storm, but in these times the storm is still affecting the community at full strength. On Saba we are experiencing similar effects.
In each of the 6 editions a different aspect is highlighted, i.e., the comprehensive school, politics, police, health care, the primary school and the new business men. The makers did not focus on commonalities but, in contrast, have been highlighting the differences. Of course this results in interesting material for lengthy discussions that, eventually, will lead to a stable, common ground. A challenge for all of us.
The series is made for Dutch television. Narration is in Dutch, with Dutch sub-titles when English was spoken.
